Syrach - Days Of Wrath
In a murky village in Norway in 1993 a band emerged called Syrach. I have no idea what that means, nor do I care. Since their inception the band has released a handful of demos and one full length. Now their second full length is released, on Napalm Records to be precise. Lets check out Days Of Wrath.
The music is a mix between the 90s UK doom and the funeral doom of My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost. The album has its moments here and there, but overall its just a long wait until its over. There are too many parts where nothing really interesting is going on, and when something does happen you get your hopes up, only to see it crumble as the track slides by further.
An occasional heavy groove or even an up-tempo part is not uncommon on Days Of Wrath, but in the long songs theyre not able to keep their head above the water. The feeling that youre listening to music that makes you yawn doesnt help much either, not even guest performances of Grutle Kjellson (Enslaved) and Silje Wergeland (Octavia Sperati) can help that.
I wouldnt say its a bad album, its just boring to me. A one-sided sound and a one-sided vocalist add to a monotonous recording, and even in doom metal that can be a bad thing. Too bad.
